Day Four

Spain; here we come. San Sebastian

Being so near (?) to the Bay of Arcachon, I decided to take a look. Bad Decision! It took a little over an hour to get there, and then instead of the quaint fishing village I expected (we probably missed it!) it was more like one of those towns the Americans build for old people! Clean, tidy, modern but with marvellous sandy beaches and coast walks through pine trees.

 On to San Sebastian

A few hours later we arrived in San Sebastian. What a lovely city. Plenty of water to walk alongside and, possibly because it wasn´t quite as hot as Bordeaux, more comfortable. We made our way along the river to the sea and they had a surf fair with a market for anything to do with water sports. Two ugly buildings on the quay spoilt the view, but looking back we saw our own accommodation was a complete example of the worst of communist/fascist architecture: I assume it dates back to before Spain´s democratic age. See if you can spot it here!

The city has lots of views of the sea and beaches on both flanks, a small harbour and lots of wide open plazas with fountain or park.

Walking through the old city you needed earplugs or earphones with your favourite music. A VERY popular event here is the Dostoniarra - a rowing competition which brings thousands to the city every year.

Lots of lovely bars and restaurants with their own style of tapas - the pintxos. And good beer!

We took a 40 minute boat ride, found a bar and then returned to hotel area, found a cheap bar but good conversation with a friendly local (all locals are friendly! everywhere).
