Day Six

Asturias

Gijon

Gijon lies in the area known as Asturias, and today we had a short tour through a small part. Heading northwest we headed for Luanco and saw lovely river estuaries, high cliffs and beautiful sandy beaches.

We also saw evidence of how Asturia made its money up until recently. Iron ore mining. The factories are still their, with old, dirty, dilapidated corrugated metal buildings, still partly in operation (but no pictures - too ugly!). We took some photos of an old mine, last used in the 1980s.

Then on to Alvires, a busy port important in the energy business: massive pipes from Siemens everywhere. Stop for coffee and a cake before going on to Ovieda. A lovely town with a lively centre. Another example of why we like Spain: Clean streets (Gijon streets were WASHED at 7 this morning), lovely yellow stone buildings, a range of attractive window designs, stores with names we don´t know and cannot pronounce. Oh, and if you buy a coffee or a beer (cheaper already than Germany) you usually get something extra.
