Day Nineteen

Cartagena and Denia

Since confusing Cartagena with Carthage (how could anybody) it has been one of my aims to visit Cartagena in the southwest of Spain. Leaving Fuengirola as the sun was rising we arrived there about 12 o´clock. The first impression was similar to that at Santander - cruise liners!! Two were moored in the harbour and the main street of Cartagena was full of very pale visitors carrying their shopping bags back to the boats! The main street is much like other Spanish cities with wide polished paved pavements but it lacked a certain charm that Malaga, for example, has.

Then on to Denia. Friends of ours have visited Denia many times so it was interesting to see it. Nestled between mountains and two beaches it has a very large marina for such a small city. The castle is extensive and the streets largely traffic free which is nice. We found a nice restaurant in the historic old quarter only 100 meters from our lodgings.
